Arepas con Queso Recipe

Arepas con Queso Recipe

  • Author: Skyar
  • Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups pre-cooked cornmeal (masarepa, such as P.A.N.)
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup milk (optional, for extra softness)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (mozzarella, queso blanco, or any melty cheese)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (melted)
  • Extra butter or oil for cooking

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, salt, and butter. Gradually add the pre-cooked cornmeal (masarepa), mixing with your hands or a spoon until a soft dough forms. If using milk, add it now for extra softness.

Step 2: Knead the Dough

Knead the dough for about 3–5 minutes until smooth and pliable. If it feels too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time until it reaches the right consistency. If it’s too sticky, add a bit more cornmeal.

Step 3: Shape the Arepas

Divide the dough into equal portions (about the size of a golf ball). Flatten each piece into a disc, about ½ inch thick. Place a small handful of cheese in the center of each disc and fold the dough over, sealing the edges carefully. Flatten slightly to reshape.

Step 4: Cook the Arepas

Heat a lightly greased skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook the arepas for about 5–7 minutes on each side until they develop a golden crust. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even cooking.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy!

Once golden brown and crispy, remove the arepas from the heat. Serve them hot, with butter on top or extra cheese inside. Enjoy them on their own or with your favorite dips and sides.
