Ingredients
Basic Ingredients:
- ½ cup extra virgin olive oil – choose a high-quality, cold-pressed variety
- 2 cloves garlic, finely minced or grated
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes – for a bit of heat
- ½ tsp black pepper, freshly ground
- 1 tsp sea salt or kosher salt
- 1 tsp balsamic vinegar (optional, adds depth)
- 1 tbsp grated parmesan cheese (optional, for a cheesy twist)
- Fresh parsley or rosemary, finely chopped for garnish
- Crusty bread, such as sourdough, baguette, or ciabatta, for dipping
You can always customize your mix based on the herbs and spices you prefer.
Instructions
Step 1: Select the Best Olive Oil
Choose extra virgin olive oil with a bold, peppery finish. It’s the star of the show, so don’t skimp on quality!
Step 2: Prepare the Garlic
Mince the garlic finely or use a garlic press. If you prefer a more subtle flavor, lightly sauté the garlic in olive oil for a few seconds.
Step 3: Mix the Herbs and Spices
In a small mixing bowl, combine the oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, black pepper, and salt. Stir them together gently.
Step 4: Combine Everything
Pour the olive oil into the bowl with the herbs and spices. Add in the garlic, balsamic vinegar (if using), and parmesan cheese (if using). Mix thoroughly using a whisk or spoon.
Step 5: Let It Sit (Optional but Recommended)
Let the dip sit for 10–15 minutes to allow the flavors to blend beautifully. You can even make it a day ahead and refrigerate for richer flavor.
Step 6: Serve
Transfer the dip to a shallow dish or platter. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley or rosemary. Serve with warm, sliced bread.
