- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1 tbsp oil (for frying)
For the Brown Gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Patties
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and onion powder.
- Mix everything together until well combined but do not overmix, as it may make the patties tough.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval or round patties about 1/2-inch thick.
Step 2: Cook the Hamburger Steaks
- Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the hamburger patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until they develop a deep brown crust.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate while you prepare the gravy.
Step 3: Make the Brown Gravy
- Reduce the heat to medium and melt the butter in the same skillet.
- Add the sliced onions and cook until they become soft and caramelized, about 5 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir continuously for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and thyme. Stir to combine.
- Let the gravy simmer for about 5 minutes until it thickens.
Step 4: Simmer the Patties in Gravy
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning some gravy over the top.
- Reduce the heat to low and let them simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend together.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy
- Remove the skillet from heat and let it rest for a few minutes.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or roasted vegetables.
