Classic Patty Melt Recipe – A Perfectly Crispy & Cheesy Sandwich

  • Author: Skyar
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices of rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar for variation)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for grilling)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for onions)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional for extra flavor)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Onions

  1. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and caramelized (about 15 minutes).
  3. Set the onions aside.

Step 2: Make the Beef Patties

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  2. Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape them into oval patties (similar to the bread shape).
  3. Heat the same skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked to your desired doneness.
  4. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

Step 3: Assemble the Patty Melt

  1. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
  2. Place one slice of bread (buttered side down) in the skillet.
  3. Layer Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top with a second slice of bread (buttered side up).

Step 4: Grill the Patty Melt

  1. Cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted.
  2. Flip carefully and repeat on the other side.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  • Remove the sandwich from the skillet, slice it in half, and serve hot!
