Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 4 slices of rye bread
- 4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar for variation)
- 2 tbsp butter (for grilling)
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for onions)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional for extra flavor)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
- Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and caramelized (about 15 minutes).
- Set the onions aside.
Step 2: Make the Beef Patties
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape them into oval patties (similar to the bread shape).
- Heat the same skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked to your desired doneness.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
Step 3: Assemble the Patty Melt
- Butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
- Place one slice of bread (buttered side down) in the skillet.
- Layer Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top with a second slice of bread (buttered side up).
Step 4: Grill the Patty Melt
- Cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted.
- Flip carefully and repeat on the other side.
