Delicious Bao Buns Recipe

  • Author: Skyar
  • Total Time: 2 hours (including rising time)

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients for Bao Buns Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

For the Filling (Optional):

  • 1/2 lb pork belly, cooked and sliced (or chicken, beef, or vegetables)
  • Hoisin sauce or your favorite filling sauce
  • Pickled vegetables or cabbage (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro and green onions for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy. This activates the yeast, which is essential for making the dough rise.

Step 2: Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Once the yeast mixture is foamy, pour it into the dry ingredients along with the vegetable oil. Mix everything together until a dough starts to form. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes on a lightly floured surface, until smooth and elastic.

Step 3: Let the Dough Rise

Place the dough in a clean bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Allow it to rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 4: Divide and Shape the Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten each ball into a disc, about 3 inches in diameter.

Step 5: Steam the Bao Buns

Place each flattened dough disc on a small square of parchment paper. Prepare your steamer baskets by heating water and arranging the bao buns inside. Steam the buns over high heat for 12-15 minutes until they are soft and fluffy. Be sure to leave enough space between the buns to prevent them from sticking together.
