For the Chicken:
- 1 ½ lbs (680g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts (cut into bite-sized pieces)
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika (optional, for extra flavor)
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons water
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Honey Sesame Sauce:
- ⅓ cup honey
- ¼ cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon minced ginger
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish)
- 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken Coating
- In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
- In another bowl, whisk the eggs with water.
- Dip the chicken pieces into the egg mixture, then coat them in the flour mixture. Set aside.
Step 2: Fry the Chicken
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the chicken in batches for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
Step 3: Make the Honey Sesame Sauce
- In a saucepan over medium heat, add honey, soy sauce, ketchup, rice vinegar, and sesame oil.
- Stir in minced garlic and ginger.
- Bring the mixture to a light simmer.
- Add cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) to thicken the sauce.
- Stir until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
Step 4: Combine Chicken and Sauce
- Add the fried chicken to the sauce and toss until evenly coated.
- Let it simmer for 1-2 minutes to absorb the flavors.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
- Sprinkle sesame seeds and sliced green onions on top.
- Serve immediately with steamed rice or vegetables.
