For the Chicken:

  • 1 ½ lbs (680g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Honey Sesame Sauce:

  • ⅓ cup honey
  • ¼ cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon minced ginger
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Chicken Coating

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  2. In another bowl, whisk the eggs with water.
  3. Dip the chicken pieces into the egg mixture, then coat them in the flour mixture. Set aside.

Step 2: Fry the Chicken

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Fry the chicken in batches for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  3. Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

Step 3: Make the Honey Sesame Sauce

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, add honey, soy sauce, ketchup, rice vinegar, and sesame oil.
  2. Stir in minced garlic and ginger.
  3. Bring the mixture to a light simmer.
  4. Add cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) to thicken the sauce.
  5. Stir until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon.

Step 4: Combine Chicken and Sauce

  1. Add the fried chicken to the sauce and toss until evenly coated.
  2. Let it simmer for 1-2 minutes to absorb the flavors.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

  1. Sprinkle sesame seeds and sliced green onions on top.
  2. Serve immediately with steamed rice or vegetables.
