For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup steak sauce (A1 or your favorite brand)
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

For the Buns & Toppings:

  • 4 brioche or potato buns, toasted
  • 4 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 cup crispy fried onions
  • Lettuce or arugula (optional)
  • Pickles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Cook the Ground BeefIn a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Step 2: Sauté the AromaticsAdd the diced onions and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the onions turn translucent and fragrant.
  3. Step 3: Make the SauceIn a small bowl, whisk together beef broth, steak sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the beef.
  4. Step 4: Simmer the MixtureReduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens. If needed, mix 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with 2 teaspoons of water and add it to the mixture to thicken further.
  5. Step 5: Assemble the Sloppy JoesPlace a slice of cheese on each toasted bun bottom, then spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture on top. Sprinkle with crispy fried onions and add lettuce or pickles if desired. Top with the other half of the bun and serve hot.
