Ingredients
- 4 cups canned green beans, drained (or fresh green beans, trimmed)
- 4 strips of bacon, chopped
- 1/2 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a spicy kick)
Instructions
Step 1: Cook the Bacon
In a large saucepan or skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking. Once crispy, remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set it aside, leaving the bacon grease in the pan.
Step 2: Sauté the Onion and Garlic
Add the diced onion to the bacon grease and sauté until softened and translucent (about 3-4 minutes). Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
Step 3: Add the Green Beans
Pour in the drained green beans and stir well to coat them in the bacon grease, onions, and garlic mixture.
Step 4: Create the Flavorful Broth
Add the chicken broth, brown sugar, butter, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
Step 5: Simmer and Serve
Let the green beans simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they absorb the flavors and become tender. Return the crispy bacon to the pan, stir, and cook for another 2 minutes. Serve warm and enjoy!
